Jim Machovec was a school teacher and musician. He and two of his brothers fled their homeland of Czechoslovakia as political refugees. Jim left his country with only a small suitcase and his beloved clarinet. After immigrating to Canada in the 1950’s, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, Training Command Band, a position he held for 27 years.

After retiring, he continued to be very active musically. He was a member of the Winnipeg Pops Orchestra and Calvary Temple Music Ministry. He participated annually at Folklorama, performing at the German and Czech pavilions. Jim also taught clarinet and saxophone throughout this life.

He was instrumental in helping his wife Elsie begin her musical career as a piano teacher, celebrating 50 years of teaching in 2014. Elsie and her family established this bursary in honour and in memory of Jim.

The James Vaclav Machovec Memorial Bursary is awarded to a promising clarinetist participating in grade/level 9 to honours classes, as selected by the adjudicator.
