PIANO NOTES AND REGULATIONS
In addition to the following discipline specific information, please refer to the general rules and regulations.
20TH/21STCENTURY COMPOSERS: Music of the 20th/21st century.
BAROQUE COMPOSERS: Music of the Baroque period, circa 1600-1760.
CANADIAN COMPOSERS: For extensive listings of music by Canadian composers, refer to the Contemporary Showcase Syllabus www.acnmp.ca
or the Canadian Music Centre www.musiccentre.ca.
CLASSICAL COMPOSERS: Music of the Classical period, circa 1760-1825. Where there are two classes for Classical era compositions, one class
is for sonata/sonatina/divertimento movements only and the other is for all other compositions from the Classical era (e.g. bagatelles, theme &
variations).
CONCERTO: Concerto classes are understood to include concerto, concertino and multi-movement concerted works. Movements from these works
must be entered in Concerto classes.
GRADE/LEVEL: Repertoire graded by RCM/CC must be performed at the grade(s)/level(s) listed in their current syllabi. Ungraded repertoire should
be equal in difficulty to graded repertoire performed in the same class(es).
RECITAL GROUP: Three selections by one or more composers. No sonata or concerto movements. Participants will be adjudicated on the selection
of the group; technique, style, and interpretation. The purpose of this class is to provide an opportunity for students to prepare and perform a recital
program in public. Participants will receive adjudication only. Time limits must be observed.
REPEATS: In sonatina/sonata and concerto classes, repeats are NOT to be played. Repeats in other classes are to be used at the discretion of the
student/teacher. Da capo markings are to be observed.
ROMANTIC COMPOSERS: Music of the Romantic Period, circa 1825-1900. The music of Sergei Rachmaninoff is regarded as music of this era.
SELECTION: Unless otherwise indicated in THIS syllabus, the word selection refers to:
 One piece by a composer, and not two or more short pieces from a collection or cycle.
 One movement of a larger work such as a suite.
SONATA: Sonata classes are understood to include sonata, sonatina and divertimento. Movements from these works must be entered in Sonata
classes.

Own choice, two consecutive movements of a sonata. If the work is a
sonatina or a one-movement sonata, (i.e. Prokofiev, Sonata #3), the
entire work should be performed. This is the only piano class at this
grade/level in which movements from a sonata by a Romantic,
20th/21st century, French or Canadian composer may be played.

One selection, own choice. May be a transcription of W.A. Mozart’s
work. Time limit 10 minutes. No piano concertos. Instrumental
sonatas, one movement only. Please specify instrument on entry

CLASS 2571 PIANO SOLO, CONCERTO, DIPLOMA
Own choice, one movement of a concerto. Orchestral part to be
played on a second piano. This is the only piano class at this
grade/level in which a concerto movement may be played.
CLASS 2572 PIANO SOLO, OWN CHOICE, DIPLOMA
One selection, own choice. Time limit 12 minutes.
CLASS 2573 PIANO SOLO, RECITAL GROUP, DIPLOMA
Three selections, own choice, by one or more composers.
Participants will receive adjudication only. Time limit 15 minutes.

sonata by a Baroque composer may be played.

Own choice of a complete chromatic fantasy and fugue, Italian
concerto, toccata, suite or partita. No preludes and fugues or Bach
transcriptions.
